Care for oneself and love for family, creative communication is all in the midsummer
Text: Mr. Cheng Tsz Chung, Social Worker at the St. James' Settlement Wan Chai Integrated Family Service Centre
The centre has been committed to organising a variety of mindfulness activities for community members, fostering their inner and outer balance and health, thereby encouraging them to "take care of themselves." In the last quarter, we conducted practices such as breath awareness, body scanning, mindfulness meditation, and stretching exercises for various community members. This summer, we will build on this foundation by hosting the "Cultivating a Peaceful Mind" event for community members, allowing them to experience mindfulness practices and create glass bottle art, enabling them to take good care of their physical and mental needs.
In addition to being aware of their own needs, the mental health of children at home cannot be overlooked. Taking good care of children's physical and mental health is also an act of "loving the family." The centre firmly believes that play is a unique language for children, and we also believe that mindfulness practices can help children improve their emotions. If children can gradually improve their emotions and parents can learn how to communicate with their children through play, we believe that families can be healthy and happy, and they can "love in the vibrant summer of communication and creativity." In light of this, the centre has specially organised the "Mindful Kids" event, which uses mindfulness practices and play to help children learn to focus on the present, improve their emotions, and cultivate a good state of mental health.
In addition, communication requires skill, and such skill comes from wisdom and experience. Therefore, the centre continues to organise the "Child-Centred - Connecting with Children's Hearts" parenting guidance courses for families in the area, assisting them in grasping modern parenting wisdom and understanding how to handle children's negative behaviours and emotions. Children can also participate in balanced groups, where they can develop a sense of security, self-esteem, and social intelligence through play. The centre hopes that after completing the course, the parents' love for their children will become even closer, and the feeling of being loved will increase day by day for the children.
Furthermore, the "Messy Cat Playtime" and "Fun Growth Sensory Integration Movement Class" will be launched again, allowing creativity between parents and children to be fully expressed. In addition, the centre will also encourage families to step outside through a series of summer experience activities, broadening their horizons and expanding their knowledge, while also promoting parent-child relationships and communication during the activities.
Please take the opportunity to register for the first round of summer activities by visiting our centre in person from 15th April 2019 (Monday) to 9th May 2019 (Thursday).
